Here at the Wall Street Journal we've created a new way to let you explore US census data:

By drawing your own map of the area you're interested in!

Log-ins are just to associate each map with the person who drew it and for us to see how people are using this site while we develop it. We'll never post anything to either service or re-use your data for any purpose.

Draw, Save and Export

To draw a map, toggle between "draw mode" and "erase mode" by pressing <spacebar> and <e> respectively.

After saving what you've drawn you can export the result as a KML file.

Census Data

We've loaded the map maker with the latest US Census Bureau census block shapefiles and the 2010 Census PL 94-171 redistricting population data. This data was helpfully processed for the block level by FairPlan2020. For now, we've only included population breakdowns by race and ethnicity.

If it would be useful to you to have other data fields, please let us know what you want and why and we'll try and make it happen.

With this data you could try and answer questions like

• How many people live in the East Village?
• What's the racial breakdown of your university campus?
• How many people live in your census block?

Free to use!
